Greater Irvine ChamberLeaders Circle member, UC Irvine celebrated the grand opening of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UCI Applied Innovation  at the Cove @ UCI on June 20.

UCI Applied Innovation, in partnership with the SBDC and the Chamber, provides small businesses and start-ups with supplemental resources to help develop their professional networks and grow their business.

UCI Applied Innovation brings campus-based discoveries together with Orange County’s vibrant business community to support job creation and economic growth. The opening of the SBDC at UCI Applied Innovation facilitates these goals by providing no-cost confidential consulting in business development, funding, and technology commercialization strategy. The program houses four award-winning, high-performing consultants with more than 30 years of combined business experience.

“Our consultants are dedicated to helping high-growth ventures in technology, life science, med-tech and med-device business sectors from both the community and the UCI ecosystem,” said Julie Cranston, director, SBDC.

UCI Applied Innovation is working to cultivate an “innovation district” in the heart of Orange County, producing more start-ups, more scale-ups, and, ultimately, a world-class entrepreneurial ecosystem.

UCI Applied Innovation Executive DirectorRichard Sudek said during the open house, that of the $17.8 billion invested in UCI startups, 68 percent of that investment is in California, 43 percent is in Southern California, and 17 percent is in Orange County.

“There is a center of gravity for entrepreneurship in Orange County,” he said.
