Irvine voters headed to the polls yesterday to vote in the Primary Elections. Voters approved Greater Irvine Chamber-supported Measure C, a taxpayer protection measure will require a two-thirds vote of the Irvine City Council to impose new taxes or raise existing taxes in the city.

Similar protections have been approved by other charter cities in Orange County including Newport Beach, Anaheim, and Huntington Beach.

The protections enforced through Measure C ensure that our essential services such as police, fire, and infrastructure updates remain properly funded and help maintain the vision and mission of the Irvine Master Plan.

Chamber supported Measure D, an amendment prohibiting voter approval requirements on fiscally beneficial projects, was also on the ballot, but did not receive the number of votes necessary to pass.

Measure B in Irvine also did not receive enough votes to pass. The measure, which would have determined whether the Veteran’s cemetery would go on a 125-acre property the city received through an exchange with developer FivePoint Communities, was one of the most hotly contested measures on the ballot. The Chamber remained neutral on this measure.
