Greater Irvine Chamber Participates in First-Ever West Coast Consul Trade Mission to Mexico
Monday, July 24, 2017
By invitation from local Mexican Consul Mario Cuevas, the Greater Irvine Chamber’s Vice President of Economic Development & Tourism Linda DiMario spent the Fourth of July weekend on a trade mission to Tijuana, Rosarito, and Ensenada as a prelude to the NAFTA renegotiations. This was the first such trade mission involving Mexican Consuls from the West Coast.
Ten Mexican Consuls based on the West Coast invited a business guest to accompany them on a three-day tour designed to showcase the working relationship between Mexico and the U.S., featuring Mexico’s burgeoning wine and culinary district in the Ensenada region led by Mayor Marco Novelo, the new convention center in Rosarito led by Mayor Mirna Rincon Vargas, and tours of several manufacturing facilities in Tijuana where Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum joined the group.
The Mexico Minister of Culture, Maria Cristina Garcia Cepeda welcomed the mission to the Cultural Center of Tijuana followed by a presentation and tour of the New City medical tourism building and the Culinary Arts School.
Joining the mission and leading the discussions about the two neighboring countries in partnership, was Carlos Manuel Sada, Undersecretary for North America, Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“It was the general consensus of the delegate guests and hosts that the trade relationship between the U.S., particularly California, and Mexico was mutually beneficial and that the NAFTA renegotiations would likely focus on those areas not included in the original trade agreement such as IP protections, e-commerce and cyber security,” DiMario said.
