During the Greater Irvine Chamber Economic Vitality Council March 15 meeting, a panel of hospitality and tourism experts discussed the current state of the workforce in their industry. The panelists were George Assaf, director of operations, Irvine Marriott; Melissa Wall, partner and contract & search specialist, Express Employment Professionals; and Dylan Shipsey, director of operations, Puesto and Marisi Italiano restaurants. The discussion was moderated by Brian Montes, Economic Vitality Council Committee chair and founder and president of Scaleocity Works

A special presentation on workforce assistance programs was provided by Rhonda Miller, business solution manager at the OC Workforce Development Board. The organization assists employers in finding talent to fill open positions and provides on-the-job training with 70-80% of wages paid by the program.

For attendees such as Greater Irvine Chamber Ambassador and senior director at ClearPath Strategic Consultants Victoire Auguste-Dormeuil, a key takeaway from the meeting regarding hiring and retaining talent, is to provide “competitive pay, employee benefits, flexibility if your onsite employee needs time off, and clarity not only in the job description but also on how they will be paid and can progress in the organization.”

The Economic Vitality Council (EVC) meetings are held bi-annually at the Greater Irvine Chamber, 36 Executive Park, Ste 100, and are open to members and non-members. The next EVC meeting is on Tuesday, July 19, 4 – 4:30 p.m.
