Concordia University Irvine has been selected to participate in the #Californians For All College Corps program. Concordia is one of only four private universities in California participating in the initiative.

Announced Tuesday, 45 colleges and universities in California will be part of a new public service program that will subsidize tuition for students who do community service alongside their studies.

“California is a world leader in both higher education and service,” Governor Gavin Newsom said. “The #CaliforniansForAll College Corps advances these priorities by connecting Californians of different backgrounds with enriching service opportunities throughout the state while making college more affordable for our state’s future leaders.”

TheCalifornians For All College Corps program will start in fall 2022 with 6,500 students deployed to part-time work in areas in need, such as K-12 education disparities, climate change, and food insecurity. In exchange for completing 450 hours of service, each student will receive $10,000 toward their education.

Concordia University Irvine will serve as the lead partner of a three-school College Corps consortium in partnership with Irvine Valley College and Vanguard University. These three schools together have committed to placing at least 200 students per year in service opportunities in Orange County during the next two academic years, working with local school districts and nonprofit organizations. The consortium’s initial grant is valued at $3.85 million.

This program aligns with Concordia University Irvine’s values of forming students into “wise, honorable, and cultivated citizens” who serve their communities and the world, said Dr. Michael Thomas, Concordia’s president.

“We are deeply honored to have been selected for this special program that provides another path for students to serve our local community,” continued Dr. Thomas. “As Governor Newsom has noted, now more than ever our society will benefit greatly from citizens who have served beyond themselves.”

Concordia University Irvine is a silver-level Leaders Circle partner of the Greater Irvine Chamber.
