Greater Irvine Chamber Awards Military Veteran Students with 2021 Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Wall Scholarship
Tuesday, June 01, 2021
Each year, the Greater Irvine Chamber grants scholarships to students enrolled at Irvine Valley College (IVC) in memory of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas U. Wall, a former chairman of the Irvine Valley College Foundation and the Chamber.
Lt. Col. Thomas U. Wall Scholarship Committee trustees awarded the 2021 scholarship to recipients DeAngelo Hunter (United States Army Veteran) and Rosio Rodrigues (United States Marine Corps Veteran and Active Reserve member).
Hunter is studying administration of justice and is a member of the IVC Online Education Task Force, designed to give input from the student body directly to the professors (critical during the COVID pandemic). Hunter assisted in providing food to families during the recent Silverado fires.
“I don't want an education for the degree. I want it so I can be prepared for all the people that I want to help and will help through accomplishing my goals,” Hunter said.
Rodrigues is studying law enforcement. She works at a senior living facility, providing front-line care for residents while attending classes. Her volunteerism includes helping feed the homeless in Orange County, take care of children after school, and serving during Sunday masses at her church.
“My duty here on earth is to serve those in need. It will be my dream come true that as a career I could help serve my community,” Rodrigues said.
The scholarship is awarded to applicants who are U.S. residents, U.S. military veterans, and/or children or grandchildren of a U.S. military veteran, and are pursuing a career path in science, business, or law enforcement at IVC. Student applications were reviewed by a committee assembled by IVC. Selected students were then interviewed by trustees of the scholarship.
Through Wall’s generosity, an endowment bearing his name has been created so that, in perpetuity, an annual scholarship will be awarded to student leaders at IVC.
Wall completed a distinguished 20-year military career with more than 1,000 combat missions flown in Vietnam. Being a civic-minded individual, he understood the meaning of courage, pride, and honor. Those who knew Wall were inspired by his enthusiasm for life and his generosity. Before his passing in 2006, Wall established the Lt. Col. Thomas U. Wall Scholarship Fund at the Greater Irvine Chamber.
