JWA Resumes Nonstop Flights to Hawaii

Antsy travelers with mai tais in mind will be happy to hear that daily, nonstop SNA to HNL routes have begun again at John Wayne Airport.
United Airlines’ inaugural nonstop flight to Honolulu took off May 6 aboard a Boeing 737-700 and is the airport’s only nonstop flight between the two cities.
Nonstop flights from Santa Ana to Hawaii’s islands have had a stop-and-start history. United was the last airline at JWA to offer a quick trip to the Aloha State but canceled its flights in 2012. Those routes were originally operated by Continental Airlines, which United acquired in 2010. Other nonstop routes were available on Aloha Airlines but ceased in 2008 after the airline went bankrupt.
The new daily route departs JWA at 8:30 a.m. and arrives in HNL at 11:30 a.m. The return flight leaves Honolulu at 12:50 p.m., Hawaii time, and lands at 9:10 p.m. in Orange County.
A quick check Friday on SNA-HNL flights in July showed roundtrip tickets for the nonstop route range from $647 (basic economy) all the way to $1,782 (first class).
“This is the first new route we’ve launched from Orange County since before the pandemic, so it’s an exciting day for us and our customers,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network and Alliances.
“Customers traveling from Orange County will not only benefit from saving travel time with this new nonstop service, but with a valid negative COVID-19 test they can be pre-cleared, skip the document screening process in Hawaii and start their vacation immediately,” Quayle said in a statement.
Travelers should check the Safe Travels Hawai‘i program because restrictions are multilayered and require a lot of pre-planning. All the rules can be found at hawaiicovid19.com/travel/getting-to-hawaii.
United also has a travel center online where customers can review COVID-19 requirements, find local test options and upload required testing and vaccination records for travel. Find that at united.com/en/us/travelreadycenter.
