Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer presented a discussion to the Greater Irvine Chamber Government Affairs Committee during its virtual October meeting. Spitzer covered several Propositions that were on the Nov. 3 ballot, including Prop 20 (criminal sentencing, parole, and dna collection initiative) and Prop 25 (regarding proposed changes to the bail system).

He also provided an overview of the OCDA’s office. With 285 attorneys and over 800 staff members, it is the largest law firm in the county. The new executive team, with Spitzer at the helm, includes Chief Assistant District Attorney Shawn Nelson, Chief Bureau of Investigation Paul Walters, Special Counsel to the District Attorney Patrick Dixon, Director of Administrative Services Glenn Robison, and Public Information Officer Kimberly Edds, and Senior Assistant District Attorneys Scott Zidbeck, Keith Bogardus, Tracy Miller, and Ebrahim Baytieh.

The county’s DA office is currently prosecuting more than 20,500 active criminal cases, and more than $18.7 million in victim restitution and nearly $2.5 million in fines are being sought.

Spitzer said despite an increasing workload, staffing has remained at a little over 800. He is seeking $13.2 million in net county cost to fund the expansion of existing programs and new programs.

Spitzer said he is looking for the Greater Irvine Chamber to have a vision for what Orange County should look like in the foreseeable future, adding that coalitions play a key role in the county’s progress.

“As a convener of community stakeholders, the Greater Irvine Chamber is in the best position to bring together decision-makers and to be a catalyst for action, to ensure our economy continues to thrive,” said Bryan Starr, president and CEO of the Chamber.
