Hoag’s family of maternity services is growing. Thanks to the generosity of Gary Fudge, the Tsao family, and other visionary philanthropic donors, Hoag Hospital Irvine will open 12 new birthing suites this winter which reimages the evolving trends in maternity care in one of the county’s fastest-growing communities.

The Fudge Family Birthing Suites will offer a unique birthing experience for pregnant women and their families. Already a leader in women’s health, with the most prestigious nursing credentials in the nation and the most trusted maternity staff in Orange County, Hoag has listened to the needs and desires of today’s new mothers in designing the birthing suites which include a number of enhancements to Hoag’s traditional maternity model including access to midwives, birth plan preferences and single-room maternity care. Moms-to-be will experience labor, delivery, and the first precious moments with their newborns all in the same hospital room. And the design of the space takes advantage of its ground-floor location to include a beautiful outdoor walking garden that serves as a calming influence on expectant mothers and their partners.

"The wants and needs of new families are shifting at a rapid pace. Being mindful of these evolving expectations, Hoag has created a meaningful experience in Irvine that is relaxed, comfortable and appealing to young local families," explained Allyson Brooks, M.D., Ginny Ueberroth Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair and chief quality officer of Hoag Women’s Health Institute. “This is a direct extension of the world-renowned maternity services available at Hoag Hospital Newport Beach.”

In developing the new birthing suites, Hoag considered what the best birth centers and hospitals across the nation offered and incorporated the best qualities and concepts into the design of the 18,000-square-foot facility. In addition to the warm, home-like aesthetic, the new suites offer single-room maternity care - from admission to the hospital to returning home as a new family - along with two C-section operating rooms and a Level 2 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The unit is staffed 24/7 by an expert team including certified nurse-midwives and board-certified anesthesiologists, OB/GYN hospitalists, and neonatologists.

Dr. Brooks said Hoag has been planning for maternity services in Irvine for several years in response to the community's rapid growth and corresponding health care needs.

“The growth of young families in Irvine has expanded tremendously. In fact, of the nearly 7,000 babies who were delivered at Hoag's Newport Beach campus in 2019, 34 percent of the new mothers were from the greater Irvine area,” said Marcy Brown, senior vice president and chief hospital operations officer at Hoag. “But from the outset, we didn’t just want to add a new location for the sake of convenience alone. We also wanted to address the changing desires and expectations of this generation of new families.”

The Fudge Family Birthing Suites maintain the same commitment to expertise, state-of-the-art technologies, and excellence that families have come to expect from Hoag.

Hoag is also co-developing NurtureVR, a virtual reality (VR) program in partnership with BehaVR to harness the latest research in VR’s positive effects. This perinatal VR program, the first-of-its-kind for expectant mothers, uses VR to augment prenatal education, pain management related to pregnancy, mindfulness, and support women through postpartum care. New maternity services also include a host of support services that highlight the changing role of partners and extended family members, including childbirth and child safety classes and learning sessions for siblings and grandparents.

“Today’s families have a clear idea of what they want from their birthing experience,” Dr. Brooks said. “We are excited to be able to provide safe, comfortable and nurturing environments as they begin one of the most exciting chapters of their lives."
