California and the U.K. have strong, historic ties that have a sizable impact on both economies. The U.K. is the second-largest source of foreign investment in California––supporting more than 111,000 jobs in the state. In 2019 there was more than $11 billion in two-way trade between the economies.

“I am proud to have the opportunity to work with many foreign partners in furthering our commercial and diplomatic activity, but also particularly glad to engage with our local economic development partners, including the economic development team in Irvine who has done such a fantastic job building a deliberate, long-term, and mutually-beneficial relationship with our U.K. counterparts,” said Emily Desai, trade and investment representative for Europe, California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). GO-Biz is responsible for supporting trade and investment activity between California and the United Kingdom.

With an economy that has the size and complexity of California’s, the state depends on local leaders to help the state maintain its international leadership. The team at GO-Biz continues to support California companies in identifying export and market opportunities in the U.K. Likewise, U.K. businesses interested in exploring business opportunities in the Golden State can receive support from GO-Biz, by contacting Emily Desai.

How Can GO-Biz Help?

Prospective investors from the U.K. can count on support from GO-Biz as they begin operations in California.

For those setting up operations in California for the first time, we have a straightforward checklist to help navigate the initial steps needed to launch your business, including how to get registered with the California Secretary of State, how to open a U.S. bank account, and insight to state and local taxes.

GO-Biz offers an array of services, including site selection and incentive navigation.

Site Selection: Go-Biz provides free and confidential site selection services to help you find the right location for your business. GO-Biz begins by gathering detailed information from you about your unique facility needs and then send that information to our local partners across the state. They are able to pair the details of your business needs with facilities or sites in their regions. This will help you identify opportunities throughout California in regions you may not have previously considered.

Incentive Navigation. The GO-Biz office provides no-cost, confidential services for incentive and grant navigation. Our team of business consultants will guide you through the available tax credits, grants, and financing assistance options that are available to your business.

Permitting and Regulatory Support. Depending on the type of business and its location, there may be federal, state, regional, or local permits, licenses, or certificates that you would need to acquire. The team at GO-Biz will assist any size company with permitting and regulatory assistance.
