Irvine Valley College Welcomes New Leadership

On July 30, Irvine Valley College is set to welcome its new President, Dr. John Hernandez. An educator for more than 30 years, with 22 of those spent in administration, Dr. Hernandez was appointed president of Santiago Canyon College in Orange in July 2017, after serving as interim president there from July 2016 until his permanent appointment. 

Prior to that, he was the college’s Vice President for Student Services from 2005 to July 2016. Before joining Santiago Canyon College, Dr. Hernandez was Associate Vice President and Dean of Students at Cal Poly Pomona; Associate Dean for Student Development at Santa Ana College and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at California State University, Fullerton. Additionally, Dr. Hernandez has been an adjunct instructor in Student Development at the Higher Education graduate program at California State University, Long Beach, and taught counseling and student development courses at various colleges as well.

On August 24, Irvine Valley College will welcome Dr. Martha McDonald as IVC’s new Vice President for Student Services. With over 28 years of experience, Dr. McDonald has distinguished herself in leading, managing, and supervising student support programs in higher education. She is a champion for equity and inclusion and has dedicated her entire career to serving and supporting community college students. 

Dr. McDonald is bilingual in Spanish and English, is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and possesses a doctorate in educational leadership from California State University, Fullerton, as well as a Master of Arts in counseling and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Chapman University. Dr. McDonald was the first in her family to attend college.

For the past five years, Dr. McDonald has served as the Vice President of Student Services at Citrus College. Prior to that role, she served as the Interim Executive Dean and Dean of Students at Citrus College. As the Vice President of Student Services, Dr. McDonald was a member of the Superintendent/President’s Cabinet and was responsible for providing leadership for and direction to the division of Student Services, which was comprised of four major divisions: Campus Safety, Counseling Programs and Services, Enrollment Services, and Student Affairs. She began her career in education within the California community college system working as an adjunct counselor and instructor at Fullerton College.

Dr. McDonald brings to IVC a wealth of knowledge and expertise in many services, areas, and programs that include: athletic eligibility, Career/Transfer Center, financial aid, student conduct, student grievances, student health services, articulation, student orientation, Extended Opportunities Programs and Services, Disabled Student Programs and Services, CARE, CalWORKs, campus safety, emergency preparedness, international students, veterans services, Guided Pathways, Student Equity and Achievement Program, and the Promise program.
