T is for Travel: Irvine Hotels Celebrate National Tourism & Travel Week

This week is National Travel and Tourism Week and Irvine hotels are lighting up their windows dusk to dawn with the letter “T” for Travel and Tourism and to celebrate the strength, selflessness, and resiliency of the industry.

Hotels, one component of a much wider network of service providers, having physical visibility are displaying their continued presence serving communities and their confidence to bounce back once the economy reopens. Participating Irvine hotels are Embassy Suites Irvine - Orange County AirportHyatt House Irvine/John Wayne AirportIrvine MarriottMarriott Irvine Spectrum, and Staybridge Suites Irvine.

Established in 1983 by a congressional resolution, National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) is an annual tradition during the first full week of May for the U.S. travel community to celebrate the value travel holds for our economy, businesses, and personal wellbeing.

In the last year alone, traveler expenditures for Irvine came to an estimated $781 million, an increase of 3.9 percent over 2018, according to the 2019 Visitor Impact report conducted specifically for Irvine by Dean Runyan Associates, on behalf of Destination Irvine. The Irvine travel industry contributed $49.6 million in local and state taxes. Without visitor spending, it is estimated, that resident households in Irvine would each pay $560 more a year in state and local taxes. Irvine’s travel industry supported 5,860 Irvine jobs and was responsible for adding $267 million in wages to the local economy.

The many sectors of the U.S. travel industry will also be highlighted throughout the week of May 3-9. Using a #nttw20 social media campaign, the industry is expressing that their #spiritoftravel cannot and will not be broken despite the current economic and health crisis.
