More than 30 students at South Lake Middle School in Irvine participated this fall in the Financial Forum program presented by the Greater Irvine Chamber through its Business and Workforce Development (BWD) Committee.

Students participating in the three-part program spanning two months attended an initial workshop focused on the basics of financial management and responsibility, followed by two separate workshops engaging students in an online stock market game. Financial Forum presenters and mentors reviewed with students the stock-market game results and awarded special recognition to three students that achieved the most well-developed budget, the highest number of completed assignments, and the highest investment gain in the stock market game. All students completing the three 7:30 – 9 a.m. workshops received a Certificate of Completion from the Chamber.

This fall’s session was administrated by the BWD committee’s Financial Forum co-chairs Erin Goodrich, CPFA, of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management; Jonathan Obest, CFP, of Modern Woodmen of America; and Chris Bissonnette, CFS, CLTC, 123 College – Orange County. Volunteer mentors also included Greater Irvine Chamber staff members Tracy Yannotti,Whit Peterson, and Pepper Russell, who manages the Financial Forum program.

Because of the success of Financial Forum, it will be expanded to include a new format, one that will be presented for the duration of a full trimester (December through February) in one Irvine middle school classroom. Upon completion, the in-class format will be evaluated to determine future Financial Forum curriculum and scale.

Over the last eight years, the Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) to provide more than 2,100 students from several Irvine middle schools the opportunity to learn about financial literacy through its Financial Forum program.
