The Greater Irvine Chamber has joined a number of Orange County chambers of commerce and economic development organizations to urge the passage of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). In a letter addressed to the Orange County congressional delegation, the coalition stresses the trade agreement as critical to the economic future of Orange County, as it preserves and strengthens trade ties with the region’s two largest trading partners, Canada and Mexico.

U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico already supports 12 million American jobs, and in California, 1,470,700 jobs depend on trade with our North American neighbors. In 2017 these jobs supported $59.5 billion in goods and services exports from California to Canada and Mexico.

As the fifth largest exporting county in the state, Orange County urgently needs the USMCA to maintain and enhance its status as a globally competitive metropolitan region. Canada and Mexico are the top destinations for Orange County merchandise exports; in 2016, Orange County businesses exported $5.3 billion in goods to our North American neighbors, accounting for 28% of the County’s exports. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, merchandise exports to Canada and Mexico directly support more than 25,000 Orange County jobs.

Approval of the USMCA will preserve tariff-free access for virtually all Orange County exports to Canadian and Mexican markets. The pact also includes much-needed updates that address digital trade, enhance intellectual property protections, and facilitate a more efficient movement of goods across both borders. Furthermore, the USMCA’s labor and environmental chapters are among the strongest ever negotiated in any trade agreement.

The letter was sent to representatives Luis Correa, Gilbert Cisneros, Mike Levin, Alan Lowenthal, Katie Porter, Harley Rouda, and Linda Sanchez, and was signed by the following organizations:

  • Anaheim Chamber of Commerce
  • Brea Chamber
  • Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce
  • Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce
