Destination Irvineplayed an important role in the June EsportsTravel Summit held in Atlantic City. As part of the Greater Irvine Chamber’s destination marketing division’s ongoing promotion of Irvine as a sports destination, Dave Lucey, director of sports sales for Destination Irvine, and Samantha Anton, chief operating officer for the North America Scholastic Esports Federation at University of California, Irvine (UCI), promoted the city’s extensive esports portfolio.

UCI is the first public university to create an official esports program and is regarded as one of the best and most comprehensive in the world. Destination Irvine has joined efforts with the university to promote Irvine and the UCI Esports Arena to attract esports tournaments and events to the city.

“The UCI Esports Arena further enhances Irvine’s sports facilities, allowing us to broaden the scope of tournaments we host here,” said Wendy Haase, vice president, Destination Irvine.

The EsportsTravel Summit was launched in conjunction with the TEAMS Conference and Expo, the world’s leading conference and expo for the sports-event industry. The summit has achieved success by filling an information vacuum that exists for both organizers of esports events and those in the travel and tourism industry who want to understand and profit from the esports phenomenon. Globally, the number of esports enthusiasts is estimated at 191 million people–and growing. Just as the major sports leagues have identified esports as the best way to engage with the next generation of fans, visionary venues, destinations, and sports organizations can leverage esports tournaments and events to attract the next generation of visitors and followers.
