IVC Paralegal Instructor Hard at Work at the OC Court Self-Help Center
Monday, May 11, 2020
Irvine Valley College (IVC) paralegal studies instructor Renato Izquieta is busy on the front line of the local justice system, supervising the Orange County Superior Court Self-Help Center. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Izquieta continues to assist individuals with emergency civil and probate services, such as protecting those facing elder abuse.
At the onset of the COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders, experts cautioned there was a risk of an increase in cases such as domestic violence, elder abuse, sexual assault, and child abuse. Izquieta realized there was a greater need than ever for staff at the OC Court Self-Help Center who could make themselves readily available to the public. He worked to create a hotline for civil and probate emergency cases, as well as a general hotline and email service for all other self-help services.
Stepping up to help those most in need is nothing new to Izquieta. For the past 22 years, he has worked for Community Legal Aid, both in the Inland Empire and Orange County. He started out as a staff attorney assisting senior citizens with a variety of civil matters. Then, he transitioned into the litigation unit assisting low income and the most vulnerable with family law, consumer defense, eviction defense, public benefits, and other civil matters.
“I developed a specialty for IRS tax cases defending taxpayers against the powerful action taken by the IRS to collect against taxpayers for tax debts, including litigating cases in U.S. Tax Court. I’ve brought my skill set to the court to help the public in a broader capacity,” said Izquieta.
Izquieta has been involved with IVC for nearly a decade. He teaches both classroom and online courses in civil litigation, family law, and bankruptcy.
