The first 53 –acre phase of the Orange County Great Park Sports Park celebrated its grand opening on Aug. 5, with free daylong community festivities including sports activities, gourmet food trucks, family games, and a free concert by the Blues Brothers featuring Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi.

Built on the site of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, the Sports Park is ultimately planned to be nearly twice the size of Disneyland and is the result of innovative public-private partnership between the City of Irvine and FivePoint, which is a Leaders Circle member of the Greater Irvine Chamber.

Irvine Mayor Donald Wagner, Board of Supervisors representative Todd Spitzer, and FivePoint Chairman and CEO Emile Haddad gave remarks in the new Championship Soccer Stadium, which can hold up to 5,000 fans. Standing alongside these dignitaries on the field emblazoned with FivePoint and the City of Irvine logos, were other representatives who have worked to make the project come to life, as well as athletes and soccer greats Landon Donovan and Amy Rodriguez.

Irvine residents and visitors were introduced to community partners University of California, Irvine, Irvine Police Department, and Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce through hosted booths situated between the completed sports venue and in-progress development.

Destination Irvine and the City of Irvine are working together to bring national and international tournaments and events to the Orange County Great Park.
