Irvine Valley College (IVC) held its 33rd annual Commencement Ceremony at 5 pm Thursday May 24, outdoors at the Live Oak Terraces next to the Performing Arts Center.

Commencement Speaker: Tyrone Howard, PhD, Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion and Professor, UCLA

Student Speaker: Glayol Kashani, who was born to Iranian immigrants in Chicago, Illinois in the summer of 1999. Her parents moved to California to give her a better opportunity for education. She was bullied in elementary and high school due to her differences, but used this hurt to fuel her dreams. Glayol began attending Irvine Valley College at age 16. Many people told her she was throwing away her senior experience. She took several classes that didn’t fulfill her, but then fell in love with psychology and neurological sciences and became a Psi Beta officer. Volunteering at shelters and presenting at research conferences helped her realize that the fulfillment she received from helping and understanding others was irreplaceable. Glayol changed her major to psychology and hopes to find a pathway to neurological sciences. In her personal life, Glayol writes and performs poetry. She loves bodybuilding, athletic training, dancing, and music. In the future, Glayol hopes to write a bestselling self-help novel based on her academic research, empower women to pursue fields that are male dominated, and be a motivational speaker to encourage people to pursue and value education.
