Irvine Mayor Farrah N. Khan hosted on Dec. 8 a press conference at City Hall to announce the creation of an Innovation Council comprised of representatives from local business, education, and government.
Mayor Khan’s Innovation Council will work to define specific actions needed to help position Irvine as a regional hub of innovation and technology. The goal is to create a collaborative and multifaceted Strategic & Action Plan to help attract, retain, and support scalable, sustainable, and high-growth technology businesses. In particular, there will be a focus on pipeline programming to encourage innovation at local schools.
The Innovation Council will be made up of industry leaders Bryan Starr, president and CEO of the Greater Irvine Chamber, Abhi Mukherjee, operating partner for CerraCap Ventures, Errol Arkilic, chief innovative officer and executive director of UCI Beall Applied Innovation, and Joe Kiani, CEO and Board chair for Masimo, and seasoned entrepreneurs and other leaders from a cross-section of government, education, and business sectors including Chapman University, Edwards Lifesciences, FivePoint Communities, Google, Irvine Company, Irvine Valley College, KW Capital Partners, Microsoft, Octane, Orange County Business Council, Sunstone Management, Inc., Sustain SoCal, and University of California, Irvine.
“As the City of Irvine celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and we look ahead to the future, there is no doubt that our next chapter will be defined by our growing prominence in technology and innovation,” Mayor Khan said. “I am excited to announce I have established an Innovation Council made up of representatives from business, education, and government that will identify actions we can take to ensure Irvine is positioned to be a regional hub of innovation and technology.”
