Rental Assistance Program Reopens Sept. 21

The City of Irvine will reopen its Rental Assistance Program on Monday, Sept. 21 to provide additional financial support to residents impacted by COVID-19.
Earlier this summer, the city committed $2 million in one-time federal CARES Act funding to help 2,000 households with rental payment assistance or lease termination fees. The application period ended on July 24 and resulted in approximately 1,750 approved applications. This second round of funding will provide grants to as many as 250 additional Irvine renters.
“We established this program in the summer to help Irvine residents keep their homes after facing job loss and financial pressures due to the coronavirus,” Irvine Mayor Christina Shea said. “We are pleased to be reopening this program, providing relief to more residents during these difficult times.”
Renters can apply for one of two grants:
- A maximum one-time $1,000 grant to provide assistance with lease termination fees.
- A maximum one-time $1,000 grant to provide rental payment assistance.
The application period opens on Monday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m. and closes on Friday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m. This program is only eligible to residential renters and is not available to commercial, industrial or other types of business-related tenants.
To qualify for participation in the Rental Assistance Program, residential renters must meet all of the following criteria:
- Must be a residential renter in the City of Irvine.
- Must have a valid lease.
- Renter must demonstrate a financial hardship as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Must not have received other rental assistance from any governmental agency, including grant funding from the first round of this Rental Assistance Program.
Upon closure of the application period, a lottery system will be used to select grant recipients, in order to provide equitable access for all Irvine renters.
