Larry L. Zeiber has joined City of Hope as the vice president of philanthropy for Orange County, where he is leading fundraising for the $1 billion world-class campus underway in Irvine. The much-anticipated campus will feature the latest in cancer research and treatment, changing the way cancer care is delivered across the region.
“City of Hope’s medical breakthroughs are fueled by generous philanthropic donations. That generosity thrives in Orange County, where we have already seen incredible enthusiasm from many diverse donors,” said Kristin Bertell, chief philanthropy officer, City of Hope. “With Larry on board, we now have a driving force who will build philanthropy programs and relationships that support our much-welcomed and much-needed expansion into the region.”
Since City of Hope announced its plan to develop and operate at 21st-century comprehensive cancer campus and network of care in Orange County, donor response has been strong.
Many view the project as the next generation of care and seek the opportunity to help shape it.
At the center of the Orange County network will be the Irvine campus situated on 11 acres at FivePoint Gateway and housing a comprehensive clinical hub for specialized cancer care, phase 1 to 3 clinical trials, precision medicine, early detection and prevention programs. Orange County’s first hospital dedicated exclusively to treating and curing cancer is also planned for the Irvine site in 2025. City of Hope’s Newport Beach location, the first phase of the expansion in Orange County, opened in January.
“Larry has a proven track record as a development executive and we are thrilled to welcome him to the Orange County team,” said Annette M. Walker, president, City of Hope Orange County. “Larry is an exceptional leader who understands the urgency of our mission to bring our world-class cancer care and breakthrough research to Orange County.”
Orange County is familiar to Zeiber, who served as Executive Director of Principal Gifts and School Programs at UC Irvine. His experience as a development executive for major institutions includes principal and major gifts fundraising, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, and board development and engagement.
Most recently, Zeiber was executive director of university development and assistant vice president of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Foundation. He established the university’s principal gifts program and served on the leadership team that planned and launched UCSF: The Campaign, a $5 billion fundraising effort that exceeded its goal. During the campaign, UCSF set a new fundraising record, raising more than $1 billion in new commitments in a single year, placing it No.1 in fundraising among public universities nationwide in 2016.
More than 100 million people across the globe are estimated to have benefited from discoveries made at City of Hope. The organization’s world-renowned research speeds the development of new drugs and interventions to the bedside, allowing patients to access the latest advances in cancer care, including approximately 500 clinical trials.
