Greater Irvine Chamber Financial Literacy Program Visits South Lake Middle School Students
Tuesday, April 30, 2019
Over the last eight years the Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) to provide more than 2,000 students from several Irvine middle schools the opportunity to learn about financial literacy through its Financial Forum program. The program, offered through the Chamber’s Business and Workforce Development Committee, in March visited 70 students at South Lake Middle School in Irvine.
The program included a basic financial literacy component and an online stock-market game. The program’s financial literacy curriculum covered money management practices including making and maintaining a budget, saving and credit card issues, as well as loan and scholarship opportunities and procedures.
The program has also covered stock market investment concepts and practices, such as conducting research during the investment selection process and daily monitoring of stocks for the purpose of investment performance analysis.
This year’s session was administrated by the committee’s Financial Forum Task Force leaders Erin Goodrich, CPFA, of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management; Jonathan Obest, CFP, of Modern Woodmen of America; Chris Bissonnette, CFS, CLTC, 123 College – Orange County.
Volunteer facilitators were Greater Irvine Chamber members Daniel Tomlinson, Merrill Lynch; Brian Andersen, Telecomprehensive Solutions; and Dr. Brian Dozer, Webster University, Irvine Metro Campus, and members of the Chamber staff.
During a follow-up session on April 30, Financial Forum presenters and facilitators reviewed with students the stock-market game results and awarded certificates to three students that achieved the most well-developed budget, the highest number of completed assignments, and the highest investment gain in the stock market game.
